The Spider’s Thread

SYNOPSIS:

The Buddha Shakyamuni is meandering around Paradise one morning, when he stops at a lotus-filled pond. Between the lilies, he can see, through the crystal-clear waters, the depths of Hell. His eyes come to rest on one sinner in particular, by the name of Kandata. Kandata was a cold-hearted criminal, but had one good deed to his name: while walking through the forest one day, he decided not to kill a spider he was about to crush with his foot. Moved by this single act of compassion, the Buddha takes the silvery thread of a spider in Paradise and lowers it down into Hell.

Down in Hell, the myriad sinners are struggling in the Pool of Blood, in total darkness save for the light glinting off the Mountain of Spikes, and in total silence save for the sighs of the damned. Kandata, looking up by chance at the sky above the pool, sees the spider’s thread descending towards him and grabs hold with all the might of a seasoned criminal. The climb from Hell to Paradise is not a short one, however, and Kandata quickly tires. Dangling from the middle of the rope, he glances downward, and sees how far he has come. Realizing that he may actually escape from Hell, he is overcome by joy and laughs giddily. His elation is short-lived, however, as he realizes that others have started climbing the thread behind him, stretching down into the murky depths below. Fearing that the thread will break from the weight of the others, he shouts that the spider’s thread is his and his alone. It is at this moment that the thread breaks, and he and all the other sinners are cast back down into the Pool of Blood.

Shakyamuni witnesses this, knowing all but still with a slightly sad air. In the end, Kandata condemned himself by being concerned only with his own salvation and not that of others. But Paradise continues on as it has, and it is nearly noontime there. Thus the Buddha continues his meanderings

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

“Spider’s Thread” is clearly meant to be just a story, not a canonical piece of religious text. Because of its theme and the elements that it uses, however, framing the text within a religious and philosophical structure would not be altogether inappropriate.

KEVIN

A story about sins and virtue. From thievery to his love for living being to his selfishness. Nice but short.

BRYAN

This story makes me mad, because the main character in this story is very selfish even he is helped by buddha to escape from the bloody hell. The story is freakish because it is all about  the consequence of what you did in your life.

Vanity of the rat

SYNOPSIS:

The story is about the rat that wants her daughter to marry to a respectable family including sun, cloud, wind, rain, stone but it ended in his kind, a rat.

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICISM OF:

KEVIN

AS a fable you’d really expect a moral lesson from this story. And this one has one important moral. Inferiority vs. Superiority.

BRYAN

This is the craziest story that i ever read beause it’s about the the rat that finding the right man for her daughter even the right man is  a cloud, sun or something that is unexpected. It is a good story but makes you insane.

Karma

SYNOPSIS:

Mohan Lal was a middle aged man who worked in the British Raj. He was ashamed to be an Indian and hence he tried to speak in English or in Anglicized Hindustani and to dress as if a high ranked British official. He used to fill the cross word puzzles of newspapers, which he did to show his immense knowledge in English. His wife Lachmi was a traditional Indian woman and due to this difference they were not having a sweet married life.

The important event occurred on a journey of Mohan Lal and Lachmi in a train. Mohan Lal made her sit in the general compartment and arranged his seat in first class compartment, which was meant for British. There he saw two British soldiers who tried to abuse him. When the arrogant Mohan Lal tried to oppose, he was thrown out of the train. He could only look through the rails on the moving train.

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

The author describes the grandmother as a beautiful woman in youth. She was loving and caring. She had great love for animals and birds. She is religious and pious.

KEVIN

First I thought that the title was some sort of name but it really means Karma. Yup, that man really deserves what he gets.

BRYAN

I like this story because it is about the magniloquent indian man who’s always speaking in fluent english but  apparently kick his ass out of the train by the two real english man soldier because of  his arrogance. It is a funny and brilliant story because is says that NO MATTER HOW SMART YOU ARE,IT ALWAYS DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU LOOK.

The Elephant and the Sparrow

SYNOPSIS:

In a dense bit of jungle lived a sparrow and his wife, who had built their nest on the branch of a tamal tree, and in course of time a family appeared.

Now one day a jungle elephant with the spring fever was distressed by the heat, and came beneath that tamal tree in search of shade. Blinded by his fever, he pulled with the tip of his trunk at the branch where the sparrows had their nest, and broke it. In the process the sparrows’ eggs were crushed, though [154} the parent-birds – further life being predestined – barely escaped death.

Then the sparrow take it’s revenge to the elephant

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

With regard to the story, I have learnt the best form of revenge is to live your life well. Revenge is a small payment and means the hurt is still there and not overcome, but I understand many need it as a compensation.

KEVIN

I could say nothing but plain “gruesome”. I never really expect this from a fable.

BRYAN

The story is about vengence because even it is a simple accident , it always cause an enormous problem. The story have a little bit of brutal scene so when you read it gradually, you will find out that it is very exciting.

My Lord The Baby

SYNOPSIS:

The Author of this story, Rabindranath Tagore was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in the field of Literature. He was a Bengalese who was born in 1861 at Calcutta. The main character here is named Raicharan. He was only 12 years old when he became a servant. His Master made him a private servant to his Son. He took good care of him, until the time that the little Master Anukul grew up and got married. When Anukul had a son of his own. Anukul still made Raicharan his Son’s private servant. But fate got in the way, the little Master disappeared when Raicharan was taking him for a stroll. No one knows whether the Baby was taken by a group of Gypsies who were hovering nearby or He drowned in the river. Anukul’s wife got so distressed and furious that there is no reasoning with her. They made Raicharan go back to his Village. There he learned that his wife just gave birth to a Baby Boy but she died immediately. At first Raicharan didn’t want to accept his Son because he knew that he cannot sire a child. But as the Boy grows, he can see similarities with his young master. And so he thought that his son is the reincarnation of the young master. Raicharan gave everything and anything his son would want, he made his son live like a rich man up to the point that he is sturbing himself to death. When he can no longer give Phailna, his son, all that he wants, he decided to go back to Anukul and told him that his son was with him all along, Raicharan let them think that he’s the one who kidnap their son. This just goes to show that a Father can and is willing to sacrifice almost anything just for the good of his beloved son. Even if it means that he will loose his son forever or it would mean his death. Also, the story relates on the belief that there is reincarnation, life after death.

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

My Lord The Baby relates on the belief that there is reincarnation, life after death. The story is a kind of reactionary work where it support the ideological.

KEVIN

this story has the best message among the seven. It was like a cycle of events, Care for his Lord’s baby, loyalty for his Lord, and love for his child.

BRYAN

This is a sad story because i did not expect that the main character can sacrifice his life, dignity specially his one and only son that make his world lively.I like the story because i learned about a lot of things when i read this story including sacrifice.

Through the beginning of their relationship the Kabuliwallah and Mini were the best of friends.

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

One of the saddest short stories I have ever read. I love it. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a heart softening book. Thanks to my social studies class I am glad I read this.

KEVIN

what really interest me in this story was Mini’s name it got me curious “name or nickname. But their friendship is also interesting.

BRYAN

It is a sad and heart touching story because of the talkative cute little girl namely mini. The story was good but too long and requires a lot of time.

Savitri’s love

SYNOPSIS:

Unusual mythological. The love story from the ‘Mahabharata’, features Devika Rani as the heroine born through divine benediction to Ashwapati, and Ashok Kumar as Satyavan, son of an exiled and blinded hermit. Although Satyavan is scheduled to die soon, Savitri marries him and eventually propitiates Yama, the god of death, to return Satyavan’s life and to restore her father-in-law’s sight.

ACCORDING TO THE CRITICSM OF:

LAWRENCE

The story of the princess Savitri is one of the best-known and best-loved tales of India. It is a story that tells the human race that our righteous thinking will be rewarded one day, may not be within our own life time.

KEVIN

Plain story of love, an unconditional love. She’d even go against the god of death just to be with someone she loves.

BRYAN

It is a self sacrificing for your love one.The story is sublime because the main character namely Savitri show how loyal she is in her sweetheart.
